The ever-sarcastic MSNBC TV host Rachel Maddow pointed out something interesting the other day. She observed that every Republican running for office at the state or national level declares that his or her laser focus is on jobs.
Then on the first day they take office they...propose or vote for a law to restrict abortion. And the next day, and the next, and the next...
This correlates with a recent sociological study of Tea Party rank and file, finding that 2/3 of them are Christian Fundamentalists, while 1/3 are Libertarian or thereabouts. Thus it makes sense to encourage Libertarians and Independents to think that Tea Party Republicans are about about cutting taxes and shrinking government--which all Tea Party types do agree on--but then once elected, most they pivot to focus on what they really care about: abortion.
Maddow said maybe this is one of those evolutions of the English langauge, where the meaning of "jobs" as "gainful employment" has been replaced by the meaning of "abortion restriction."
So the next time you see a Republican pol or pundit talking about jobs, just remember what "jobs" now means.
At least if you're a Republican.
